JOHANNESBURG - The Pretoria Zoo says demands made by workers affiliated to the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) are not feasible and it can’t afford them.

The union went on a strike at the zoo yesterday demanding better working conditions and overtime rates for weekend workers

The zoo says it cannot afford to pay higher rates for overtime hours as it will lead to the park being plunged into financial crisis.

Zoo spokesperson Craig Allenby said, “The proposal on the table is impractical because the national park is a 7-day operation, our animals have to be fed Monday to Sunday and we are also open to the public. For employees to work Monday to Friday then be paid overtime for Sunday is unfeasible.”
