KZN police arrest three suspected rhino poachers

Cape Town - Three suspected rhino poachers will appear in the Hluhluwe Magistrate's Court on Monday, after being caught by police carrying a high calibre hunting rifle, a silencer, ammunition and an axe.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said the three suspects were apprehended at about 20:00 on Friday night after police stopped and searched their white bakkie.

"The 44-year-old driver and his two passengers, 24 and 28 years of age, were arrested," he said.

"The South African Police Service has prioritised the killing and poaching of rhino and the team is commended on the arrest of these suspects."

Two suspected rhino poachers killed in shootout

Durban – Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife field rangers shot and killed two suspected rhino poachers after a gunfight at the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi game park in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The shootout occurred at 03:30 when rangers patrolling the park’s Nqolothi section heard voices, Ezemvelo spokesperson Musa Mntambo told News24.

"Our rangers observed a group of five poachers, and turned on their flashlights, simultaneously ordering the poachers to lay down their weapons. One poacher pointed a gun towards the field rangers, but he was out-gunned.

"The rangers fired first and two poachers were fatally wounded. A... rifle was recovered," Mntambo said.

During the shootout, three poachers managed to escape. The park’s K9-unit sniffer dogs were released. It is not immediately clear whether any further arrests were made.

It is understood the suspects were from the Melmoth area in KwaZulu-Natal, and investigators are looking at evidence that could link them to last Sunday’s massacre of six rhino at the same reserve.

"The syndicate is known to the SAPS and Ezemvelo authorities," Mntambo said.

Unprecedented surge

On Saturday, three heavily-armed suspects were arrested outside the park with a high caliber hunting rifle, a silencer, ammunition and an axe.

The men, aged 44, 28, and 24, are expected to appear in court on Monday on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

This follows a month of rampant poaching and an unprecedented surge in activity by heavily-armed gangs at the park.

In 2017, the park increasingly became the target of gangs and is currently regarded as the epicentre of South Africa’s rhino poaching activity.

Heightened security and the increased risks associated with getting caught at the Kruger National Park are believed to be behind poachers turning to softer targets further south.

To date, 142 rhinos have been poached in KZN since the beginning of the year. It is the highest figure ever recorded over a six-month period.

Last year, 162 rhinos were slaughtered over 12 months

MBOMBELA – A shoot-out between police and three suspected rhino poachers occurred at around 12:00 today on the R40. This after organised crime had received intelligence about a vehicle which was coming from KwaZulu-Natal which was connected to rhino poaching.

Police Flying Squad’s Capt Pieter Smit said the White River K9 Unit had managed to stop the vehicle which was coming from Barberton towards Mbombela.

The vehicle was stopped near the Tshwane University of Technology on the R40. This is where the shoot-out occurred between the three suspects and the police. Two suspects ran away and one remained in the vehicle.

Police arrested the man in the vehicle and found a large rhino horn hidden in the back bumper.

ACS Security operations manager JJ Bezuidenhout arrested the suspect with the assistance of Bossies Community Justice’s Albert Gryvenstein in Ruby Street.

Provincial police spokesman Sgt Gerald Sedibe said the police arrested the men who are both 31 years old. “We have charged them with possession of rhino horn.”

He said the third suspect was still at large.

Well done to all the good guys, and thanks for keeping up the fight! ^Q^

More killed the better, IMO. They are not poor and starving, just greedy, and willing to murder humans too.

Woman arrested with 20kg of rhino horn at OR Tambo
2017-07-26 21:00

Johannesburg – A woman was arrested after 20kg of rhino horn was found in her luggage at OR Tambo International Airport, police said on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old woman had arrived on a flight from Lusaka, Zambia, on Tuesday night, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said in a statement.

Eleven pieces of rhino horn were found in her bag, which was intercepted in the luggage transfer area of the international arrivals terminal. She had intended taking a connecting flight on SAA to Hong Kong.

She would face charges under the Endangered Species Act and appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Naidoo said efforts to stop crime in and around the airport were starting to bear fruit. Since the implementation of a plan to make the airport safe, a robbery in the cargo terminal had been foiled.

He said there had been no further reports of people being followed from the airport and robbed.
