- Sharon Pincott
- ISBN 9781770096493

An unplanned visit to South Africa's Kruger National Park changed Sharon Pincott's life as she knew it. She was a high-flying information technology specialist Down Under, but now she dreamed of working with Africa's wildlife. Eventually, she abandoned her life of privilege and luxury and moved to Zimbabwe - a country in turmoil - to live and work among elephants on land bordering Hwange National Park. It was a startling contrast to her former life. In time, Sharon formed extraordinary relationships with wild elephants, having learned to know them intimately. She treasured escapades with friends, both human and animal, in spectacular, remote places. But, as she soon discovered firsthand, the beauty and wonder of wild Zimbabwe had a dark foreboding side. Snaring of wildlife was rife, and when land invaders claimed the area where Sharon's elephant friends roamed, she went into battle for their land and their lives - while fighting for her own wellbeing, in her homeland of choice.

A Game Ranger Remembers

- Bruce Bryden
- ISBN 9781868423156

Image

This is a collection of stories about the life of a bushveld conservationist as it is lived at the ground level by that élite band of men and women who guard the Kruger National Park - at the cost of much sweat and, not infrequently, quite a bit of blood. Bruce Bryden's tales of 27 years in the service of our most famous park make a gripping and entertaining read, abounding with encounters with elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino, whether darting for research, managing culling operations by helicopter or stalking on foot.
In the best tradition of bushveld stories, there is a great deal of shooting, and a fair amount of running away; there are meetings with extraordinary characters among the rangers; memorable gatherings; hilarious mishaps and narrow escapes; and throughout, a great love and respect for both the wilderness and the creatures that inhabit it.

The Elephant Whisperer

- Lawrence Anthony
- ISBN 9780230741744

Image

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival - dangerous and unpredictable, they were also notorious escape artists and would be killed if Anthony wouldn't take them.
He agreed to give them a home, but before they could be moved they escaped again and the matriarch and her baby were shot. The remaining elephants arrived at Anthony's reserve traumatized and very angry. They escaped almost immediately .... right into the waiting guns of poachers and park rangers.
As Anthony battled to create a bond with the elephants and save them from execution, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty and freedom.
Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, this is a delightful book and will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

- Gareth Patterson
- ISBN 0340638079

Image

When George Adamson was murdered at Kora, Kenya, left behind were the three lion cubs he had adopted and was preparing for their return to the wild. The cubs were Batian the male, and Furaha and Rafiki, the two sisters.
For the second time in their young lives, the cubs were orphaned, their future uncertain. Gareth Patterson, determined to finish the work George had started, adopted the cubs and moved them to the safety of the Tuli bushlands in Eastern Botswana.
Naturally accepted as one of the pride, he set out to rehabilitate them and tells movingly of their everyday encounters as they adapt to their new surroundings. Dangerous surroundings where man is one of their most threatening opponents.

All things wild and wonderful

- Kobie Krüger
- ISBN 0140259295

Image

In All Things Wild and Wonderful, Kobie Krüger brings us further stories of her life in the Kruger National Park, where her husband is a game ranger.
After eleven years in the remote Mahlangeni region they are transferred, first to Crocodile Bridge and then to Pretorious Kop. Fully at peace in the wild and lonely landscapes of the north Kobie fears she will never adapt to the relatively people-populated southern area.
It takes time, but eventually she is able to acknowledge that the move has shown her "other Edens" and has given her a store of new and precious memories. Foremost among these memories is the unique experience of raising Leo, an abandoned lion cub. It is a fascinating and emotional encounter with the king of the beasts, which brings her and her family equal measures of joy and sorrow.
Written with her usual warmth and humour, and imbued with her love of the wilderness and all its inhabitants, Kobie Krüger's new book is truly a celebration of all things with and wonderful.

A Game Ranger's Life

- Christiaan Bakkes
- ISBN 9780798149280

Image

In February 1994 it made headline news: a young game ranger from the Kruger National Park was attacked by two crocodiles and lost his left arm. For Christiaan Bakkes, recklessness and an insatiable lust for adventure led to tragedy. Writing about his experiences a unique writer's voice was born - a South African Hemingway. In addition to two novels, Bakkes has published three collections of wilderness stories in Afrikaans, of which a choice selection is offered here.
At 42, Chris Bakkes has led the kind of life that most people can only dream of. After his recovery in 1995 he travelled through Africa for five months before moving to Namibia, where he worked for the WWF in the Kaokoveld for three years. He then joined a safari company conducting ecotours, first along the Skeleton Coast and now also in Damaraland. He and his wife both work for Wilderness Safari Namibia, where Christiaan is a guide and area manager. From time to time he also leads gorilla safaris in the forests of Uganda.
